Just in time for 4th of July Weekend, it’s an explosive episode of the Near Mint Comic Show.  We open up the show with a recap of recent events including talk of Ben’s work on the Pilotgroove Pictures 48 Hour Film Project, Just Remember That They’re Dead and our review of X-Men: First Class. We dive in and talk about the major shakeups at DC Comics including our take on digital comics and a reading challenge.

Then, in the second hour, we spin a tale of sorrow and heartbreak as only the comic fan can appreciate – and thoroughly earn our explicit tag in recounting a recent Twitter interaction with Spider-Man Editor, Stephen Wacker.  We wrap things off on a positive note with some rave reviews of Daytripper, Spider-Man 1602, Amazing Spider-Man Annual, Locke & Key and Moon Knight … yes, Moon Knight.

It’s a star-spangled powder keg of free speech and you won’t want to miss a second of it, so listen away!

Music in this episode by: the Whatnot, Pat Benatar, Aretha Franklin, Nas

Footnotes: Despite packing in over 2 hours of episode this month, we were remiss in mentioning 2 things:

  1. Last week, Comics legend, Gene “The Dean” Colan (Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Captain America, Dr. Strange and many more) passed away at the age of 84. We had the opportunity to meet Gene at the 2009 New York Comic-Con and he will be fondly remembered as one of the great statesmen and beloved creators in all of comics.
  2. Appropriately, loyal listener and friend of the show, Dan Bertwell will be running in two (that’s right, two) marathons in October and using the opportunity to raise money for the Hero Initiative. Which if you don’t already know is a fantastic charity which “creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.” Gene Colan was a recent beneficiary of the Hero Initiative, which helped him cover medical expenses as his health faded. If you’d like to help Dan raise money for a very worthy cause, you can make a donation at www.razoo.com/marathondan.
